STILL LEARNING
I’m so lucky as a busy voiceover dealing in many factual audio books -
YOUR OWN SPACE
You know the life coaches who say you should “box off” a moment in your day as “your time” when you forget about work? It’s kind of difficult when 50% of your clients are outside the UK and hence not in your time zone. Your phone buzzes and it’s another order from India or Australia! An enquiry from the USA, or Brazil! To them it’s in the middle of their working day, and I don’t mind, I love my job, it gives me so much variety. I’ve been doing some scriptwriting for a drama recently as well as a wide variety of audio books and radio and TV commercials.
To record audio books, you really DO have to box off time, as you don’t just need a few hours at least to mail chapters down but also to get “in the zone”. One audio book I’m doing is a classic PG Wodehouse one and I have “voices” for each character. I have a scratch file that I play in Adobe Audition to remind me of what each character sounds like before they appear in the story again!
On the factual side, I have recorded many scripts of a medical nature with drug names and medical conditions that are very long and unusual. Thanks goodness for pronunciation sites such as www.forvo.com and www.howjsay.com who provide samples! As a voice artist I have to sound an expert in my studio, behind the microphone, but actually, I only know as much as the script!
The human mind is amazing – just today I had four scripts to read that had to be exactly 29 seconds for a set of TV commercials and plus or minus a tiny amount, I did it first time, sight reading! Now, I’m not saying it’s only me that can do this; any voiceover worth their salt should be bale to do this, but isn’t the mind amazing that it can hone to perfection an internal “clock”?!
Have a great month and please check out my voice samples page for lots of new videos
that people have kindly let me put on my web pages where I have provided the voice-
